Performance comparison of hinted- and advertisement-based movement detection methods for mobile IP hand-offs

چکیده
In this study Hinted Cell Switching is introduced as a new alternative to the Mobile IP advertisement based movement detection methods. It is a method that relies on “hints” generated during subnetwork layer hand-offs for reacting faster to Mobile IP hand-offs. In this study the performance of Hinted Cell Switching is compared through the use of simulations against those of advertisement based movement detection methods, namely: Lazy Cell Switching and Eager Cell Switching. The performance of the latter is determined for a range of advertisement periods. The scenarios investigated involve straight line movement patterns and Mobile IP hand-offs between Foreign Agents. It is identified that Hinted Cell Switching significantly outperforms its advertisement based counterparts in managing faster movement detection; performing independantly of agent advertisement period lengths and providing a small deviation to its performance. Overall, it is demonstrated through simulations of Internet Audio streaming that Mobile IP hand-offs with Hinted Cell Switching support complete faster with minimum packet loss. Finally it is identified that Eager Cell Switching performs significanlty faster than Lazy Cell Switching in the investigated scenario.

A Complete Comparison of Algorithms for Mobile IP Hand-offs with Complex Movement Patterns and Internet Audio
In this study Advertisement and Hint Based Move Detection algorithms are compared through means of simulations. The investigated scenarios involve a mobile node that roams within a two level Mobile IP hierarchy while receiving an Internet audio stream. The mobile node exercises straight line as well as back-and-forth movement patterns of variable speeds. Algorithms are evaluated with respect to...
متن کاملAccelerating Mobile IP hand-offs through Link-layer Information, An Experimental Investigation with 802.11b and Internet Audio
In this study the Fast Hinted Cell Switching movement detection method for Mobile IP is introduced. This method assumes that the Link-Layer is capable of delivering information to Mobile IP regarding the identity of the local mobility agent. This tends to negate the need for Mobile IP movement detection as well as agent discovery and leads to accelerated Mobile IP hand-offs. Moreover, the exist...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of Mobile Ip Handoffs
The aim of this paper is to study the performance of Mobile IP hand-offs. It is determined that the key issue is the movement detection method (i.e. Lazy Cell Switching, Prefix-Matching, Eager Cell Switching). For this paper all three movement detection methods are studied. The study involves single agent subnetworks and simple movement patterns, i.e. straight movement from one subnetwork to an...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis and Improvement of Tcp during Mobile Ip Hand-offs
In this study the performance of TCP over Mobile IP (MIP) hand-offs is analysed. During Mobile IP hand-offs a Mobile Node is forced to suffer network service disruption. It is identified that due to the exponential back-off retransmission scheme of TCP, timeout values may reach sizes longer than the MIP hand-off. In these conditions the TCP communication may not resume even though network conne...
متن کاملEAP: New Fast Handover Scheme based on Enhanced Access Point in Mobile IPv6 Networks
Mobile IPv6 has been proposed to support host mobility in the Internet, yet during a handover Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) suffers from packet disruption and packet loss. However, in MIPv6, the handover process reveals numerous problems manifested by a time-consuming network layer based movement detection. Furthermore, inherent delays associated with movement detection are unavoidable in standard MIPv6....
